EMPRAPII Funds Development of NASA-Designed Lung Ventilator

First batch of devices facing Covid-19 is ready for industrial-scale production and delivery is scheduled for September

EMBRAPII (Brazilian Company for Research and Industrial Innovation) is participating in the technological development of a respirator created by NASA, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The first device to be approved in the world already has a national version ready to be produced in partnership with the company Russer, located in the interior of São Paulo, after undergoing adaptations to Brazilian standards at the EMBRAPII – Senai CIMATEC Unit in Salvador, Bahia.

The equipment designed by a team of engineers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of the US aerospace agency was called VITAL, for Ventilator Intervention Technology Accessible Locally. In a public call made by NASA to license the technology, 331 global companies and 30 Brazilian companies were attracted. Of the total, 28 were selected – nine of them from the USA and two in Brazil (CIMATEC and Russer) – to develop and manufacture the product.

Due to the pandemic, royalties were waived. Among CIMATEC's current objectives is to raise funds from institutions and companies to produce and donate around 50 fans to Brazilian states and municipalities.

Initially, a first batch of around 300 devices should be produced, each costing R$ 59 thousand, with delivery forecast for September. The company, which has already obtained approval from ANVISA, will be responsible for the entire supply chain, manufacturing, assembly and final sale of the respirators.

According to the researchers who worked on the project, the device is the only one in the segment to suspend operation during a patient resuscitation procedure, without losing the parameters previously set.

Daniel Motta, technology and innovation manager at Senai CIMATEC says that the high-impact project will increase the accessibility of the respirator for society, and highlights the importance of EMBRAPII's support as a contributor to the development and nationalization of the equipment.

According to José Luis Gordon, director of planning and management at EMBRAPII, innovation has the ability to leverage the national industry in the medical area, increasing the competitiveness of companies for the development of equipment, components and new solutions for the segment.

Currently, EMBRAPII already has more than 60 projects supported in the fight against the pandemic.
